Bozeman's Chikcpea Cafe Opens

How do we roll in Bozeman? How about French and Mediterranean cafe's opening up in the same weekend, only two blocks apart? Take that, down economy!

The recently opened Chickpea Cafe offers traditional specialties like Baba Ganoosh, Hummus, and Falafel, all house-made. Pictured below is the Hummus Shawarma plate: roasted and seared beef and lamb over hummus, pickled vegetables, and pita. Not pictured is "Chickpea's Hot Sauce," a delicious peppery salsa of sorts that added lovely heat to the already tasty dish.

Recommendation: go with friends and order several dishes to share.

Pizza Night at Home

Tonight was pizza night, with provisions from our good friends at Bozeman's All Things Italian. The two home-made pies were made with "00" flour, and the bottle of 2007 Tuscan Bran Caia tasted like a million bucks.

The "00" crusts baked up thin, crispy, and chewy. For toppings one pizza was adorned with thin-sliced potatoes, Tallegio cheese, and Da Vino Salami from Salumi. The second slightly more traditional pie featured home-made roasted tomoto puree, hot soppressata, a few green olives, roasted mushrooms, and the requisite mozzarella.

Want some? Head over to All Things Italian to get the raw materials. Then get a dangerously hot oven and make a few hundred practice pies until you get the desired results. Buon appetito.

Cafe Francais des Arts Opens in Bozeman

Francophile's delight: France has come to Bozeman. Okay, there is no Arc de Triumphe at the intersection of Main and Willson, but if you happen to stroll into the nearby Cafe Francais des Arts you might find yourself glancing out the window looking for Parisian landmarks and....wait...is that an oooooo--aaaaaa--ooooo--aaaaa siren of les sapeurs pompiers? No, but what you will hear is French-accented English at the counter and the delicate crisps-crunch of a fluffy croissant in your mouth. The apricot-brioche, crepe béchamel, and double espresso rounded out a delightfully lazy Saturday breakfast. Sandwiches, fresh bread, and other treats will have to wait for future (like tomorrow perhaps) visits.

Bone Marrow at Osteria Stellina

This is why I will never be a vegetarian. Bone marrow (at least of the bovine variety), when done nicely like the example below from Osteria Stellina in Point Reyes Station, California (http://osteriastellina.com/) taps deep into the collective cave-man (or woman) cortex. Like "beef butter", the slightly unctuous marrow spreads into a flavorful sheen onto whatever lucky delivery vehicle the diner chooses. I chose the supplied bread.

Osteria Stellina served up this tasty example with a simple garnish of garlic, capers, parsley, and lemon zest.

A Day in Point Reyes California

Point Reyes National Seashore is a wonderful place. Green (this time of year at least) rolling farmland dotted by holstein cattle tumbles into the sea on a spit of land that is slowly sliding past the North American continent. Tomales bay, and the San Andreas fault underneath, divide Point Reyes from the mainland. Beaches both wild and calm, cows, native elk, cliffs, and moss-covered forests fill the viewfinder. Tasty breakfast burritos from The Pine Cone Diner in Point Reyes Station fill my belly.
